Polynomials in Tromsø

Venue

The conference will take place at the Breivika campus of UiT – The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, which is easily reached by bus from the city centre (see below). The lecture room will be announced closer to the conference.

Tromsø lies well above the Arctic Circle. In mid-May, temperatures typically range from about 0° C to 10° C, and the weather can change quickly between sun, rain and even a late snow shower – so check the forecast before you pack your luggage. The days are already very long: the midnight sun period starts only a few days after the conference, so expect bright evenings and hardly any darkness at night (and, consequently, no northern lights at this time of year).

Getting around by bus

Buses are the most convenient way to get around in Tromsø. We recommend downloading the app Svipper (available for iPhone and Android), which has replaced the older apps Troms Billett and TromsReise. With Svipper you can plan your journey, check real-time departures and buy tickets. Tickets bought in the app before boarding are cheaper than tickets bought on the bus; single, 24-hour and 7-day tickets are available, and the whole city – including the airport and the university – lies within one fare zone.

From the airport to the city centre

Tromsø Airport (TOS) lies on the same island as the city centre and the campus. The cheapest way into town is a local city bus in the direction of the city centre (“sentrum”) from the bus stop close to the terminal; the ride takes about 15–20 minutes. Taxis and the airport express bus depart directly outside the terminal, but are considerably more expensive. Check the Svipper app for the next departure.

From the city centre to the campus

Several bus lines connect the city centre with the university in about 15 minutes; the Svipper app will show you the current lines and departures. Get off at the bus stop UiT – the one directly after UiT/Planetariet. On campus, the app MazeMap will guide you to any room.

Lunches and conference dinner

Practical information about lunches, coffee breaks and the conference dinner will be announced closer to the conference.

Cafés, bars and restaurants

After a long day of hard work, you might want to relax. Here is a small selection of our favourite places in the city centre. Note that some of them are rather small and might not be suited to large groups.

  • Art Café: very nice small café for a coffee, but also for lunch or dinner. Vegan friendly.
  • Indie: Indian restaurant. Vegan friendly.
  • Skarven: three options at the same place – Biffhuset (meat restaurant), Arctandria (fish restaurant), and Skarven, a beer bar with small dishes.
  • Bardus: two places in one – Bardus bistro for dinner, and Bardus bar, a very nice cocktail bar.
  • Huken Pub: very small pub, perfect for a beer after dinner. You can also have some burgers.
  • Driv: the student house – Ph.D. students can find “cheap” beers here.
